Expanding Radiation Protection in Construction Markets

by Luke Molnar

Imaging Solutions Pty Ltd, Australia’s leading radiation protection products and accessories supplier has recently announced its appointment as a distributor for Calder Health Care Shielding Systems.  Calder is Europe’s largest producer of protective lead sheet and lead based technical products. Their products are widely used in hospital and private imaging clinics as well as a range of industrial applications.

Included in the Calder product offering range is shielding for walls, ceilings, and floors. This incorporates lead lined door sets, lead glass observation windows and lead lined protective screens for medical procedures and departments. Calder also designs and manufactures the chevron rail system, which is the global industry standard, as well as offering heavy duty shielding for high energy radiation used in radiotherapy, oncology and PET/CT facilities, and brachytherapy suites.

In the general radiation protection sector, standard door sets are available in a range of finishes including heavy duty hinges to cope with the increased weight. A selection of door closers, door handles, kick plates, and other metal hardware are available. Window sets are similarly designed to provide high lead equivalency protection against ionising radiation. A wide range of finishes are also available.

Imaging Solutions’ CEO Glenn Honey said, “Our decision to enter the core construction market with lead shielding solutions was a logical extension for the company, as the company was complementing its existing operations in manufacturing Australia’s leading range of personal radiation protection apparel and accessories whilst also marketing leaded Med-glass as the Corning distributor for the Australian and New Zealand market. From a construction market perspective, our growing activities in the lead glass marketplace have introduced our company to a strongly growing sales channel closely aligned to our core competencies in the radiation protection market”.

Lead shielding is used extensively in hospitals, medical centres, radiotherapy clinics, and industrial applications where ionising radiation, which is potentially harmful to health, is used for diagnostic and quality assurance purposes.
